McGee’s Crossroads Middle science teacher Wesley Bullock received the American Legion Auxiliary Award for Educator of the Year at the Benson Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet and Annual Meeting on Thursday, Jan. 26.
Bullock is a second-year science teacher, and is deeply connected to the students and staff through his leadership and involvement in and outside of the school, according to McGee’s Crossroads Middle Assistant Principal Jennifer Swartz.
Bullock is a technology contact and leader for the staff, serving as the school’s Digital Learning Coach. He assists teachers with instructional technology tools to positively support their work with their students by increasing student engagement.
He is a member of the School Improvement Team, serving in a leadership role as the 7th grade representative, and is a liaison between the school’s leadership team and the 7th grade team.
Bullock supports academic competition in his role as the coach of McGee’s Science Olympiad team. He meets with a large group of students in 6-8 grade twice each week after school to train in science-related activities for competitions around the state.
He serves as the 7th grade support teacher for the school’s AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, coordinating field trips to colleges and universities, fundraising within the community, and helping the AVID team network for opportunities through his contacts at North Carolina State University.
In addition to Bullock’s leadership with staff and students, he also runs a weather station on the school’s campus behind his classroom. His degree in meteorology and passion for weather combine to provide up-to-date local weather information for the larger Benson community.
Bullock shares his passion for learning and for education through an active voice on social media where he communicates positive educational messages to a worldwide audience.
