Lateral entry is an alternative route to licensure that allows skilled individuals outside of the teaching profession to enter the classroom. The lateral entry program allows these educators to begin working in the classroom once hired by a school system.
The license is established for three years while the educator agrees to complete the approved education program and testing needed to clear the lateral license. A minimum of six semester hours are required per fiscal school year to continue to be employed in a lateral position. Lateral entry teachers are employed if certified candidates are not available.
