Committees

The Johnston County Board of Education may be assisted in its work by various board committees, both standing committees and ad hoc committees. The Board chairperson will appoint the chair and members of all board committees. Below you will find information on each of these committees.

Policy Review Committee

The Policy Review Committee holds regular monthly meetings at the Evander S. Simpson Building located at 2320 US 70 HWY Bus E in Smithfield, unless indicated otherwise on the meeting schedule. Members of the public are encouraged to attend, but may not participate in the meeting.

The role of the Policy Review Committee is to:

  • Oversee the review of policies adopted by the School Board, and ensure they are in accordance with federal and state mandates and informed by the North Carolina School Boards Association.

  • Establish priorities in policy review and adoption, in consultation with the Superintendent and the administration.

  • Set goals and schedules for policy review and adoption.

  • Review recommended Board action on policies not specifically in the purview of another School Board Committee.

  • Evaluate suggestions for School Board policy and recommend development of policies for adoption.

  • Other items as assigned by the School Board or the School Board Chairman.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee holds meetings at the Evander S. Simpson Building located at 2320 US 70 HWY Bus E in Smithfield, unless indicated otherwise on the meeting schedule. Members of the public are encouraged to attend, but may not participate in the meeting.

The role of the Finance Committee:

  • Oversee the review of all financial policies and ensure conformance with all federal and state mandates as informed by the North Carolina School Boards Association.

  • Review and consult with staff about all financial matters.

  • Recommend actions to the full School Board based on Committee meeting discussions.

  • Other items as assigned by the School Board or the School Board Chairman.

Legal Service Committee

The Legal Service Committee holds meetings at the Evander S. Simpson Building located at 2320 US 70 HWY Bus E in Smithfield, unless indicated otherwise on the meeting schedule. Members of the public are encouraged to attend, but may not participate in the meeting.

The role of the Legal Service Committee: 

  • Review the district's spending on legal matters.

  • Study avenues to save money in legal fees.

  • Recommend actions to the full School Board based on Committee meeting discussions.

  • Other items as assigned by the School Board or the School Board Chairman.
