School Health Advisory Council

School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group comprised of individuals selected primarily from the health and education segments of the community. The group acts collectively in providing advice to the school system on aspects of the school health programs. The members of the council are appointed by the school system to advise the school system.

SHAC and Local Wellness

Johnston County Public Schools is committed to providing school environments that promote and protect children's health, well being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity. The district's Local Wellness Policy and Local Wellness Policy Regulation are reviewed and revised as necessary once every two years by the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). In addition to reviewing our local wellness policy, SHAC members review results of the USDA-approved Wellness School Assessment Tool (WellSAT). The JCPS 2023 Wellness Scorecard can be viewed here.

SHAC Goals and Implementation Progress

The goal of School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is ever evolving to best meet the needs of our community and schools. As SHAC continues to support needs as they arise, we will also focus on the following two goals:

  1. Increase Johnston County Public School (JCPS) educators' access to health resources through participation in an annual Educator Wellness Fair (EWF) and distribution of resources by school leaders to staff. For the 2023-2024 school year, 31 vendors and 85 staff participated in EWF. Data continues to be collected pertaining to resources shared with school staff.

  2. Increase awareness of youth mental health through staff training and youth experiences. During the 2023-2024 school year, 2,578 JCPS staff members completed mental health training, 16 student-led clubs spread awareness of mental health and wellness, and 10 student groups attended and presented at the Johnston Collaborative / School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) meetings.
