Long Tradition
Smithfield-Selma High School (SSS) has a long tradition of Navy Junior ROTC Excellence dating back decades! Today, the program benefits from tremendous Navy, school, and community support for the 110+ Cadets who make up the Corps of Cadets.
Our Mission
Like every Junior ROTC Program across the country, our program is a Citizen Development Program whose stated mission is to instill in students in United States secondary education institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.

About NJROTC
The NJROTC program was established by Public Law in 1964 which may be found in Title 10, U.S. Code, Chapter 102. The program is conducted at accredited secondary schools throughout the nation, and taught by instructors who are retired Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers and enlisted personnel.
The NJROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation, and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by community service activities, drill competitions, field meets, flights, visits to naval activities, marksmanship training, athletic competitions, orienteering training, and other military training. Uniforms, textbooks, training aids, and travel allowances are provided by the Navy. In addition, a substantial portion of the NC certified teacher salaries are provided by the Navy and Johnston County Schools to pay for the Naval Science Instructors.
Should you require NJROTC assistance, please contact, CWO3 Ceylon Williams, USMC (ret) at (919) 934-5191 ext 5224 or by email: ceylonwilliams@johnston.k12.nc.us. Thank you!

What We Are Not
We are NOT a recruiting depot for the various branches of our nation's military. By definition, we are a CITIZEN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM, meaning we focus on teaching student cadets the values and behaviors of good citizenship.
If you are interested in ROTC but think it is only for students tracking to enter the military after high school, please understand that 87% of our students leave high school and NEVER join the military. We are an organization that values learning hands-on as well as in the classroom. The leadership tools we provide last a lifetime! Come check us out!
