Many of you received a message from the district recently that provided information on the attendance platform we began using at the start of the week. This platform is an attendance platform with the capability to inform parents of repeated student absences in various formats, including text message, email, and mailed letters.
We want to bring awareness to the notification to limit confusion and lessen the chances of the notifications being considered SPAM. The message will include the school name, the student’s first name, and a parental verification link that directs you to your specific message and student’s attendance details.
As we look forward to the events of next week, best wishes go out to the members of the cross country team competing in Kernersville tomorrow as well as to our marching band who is competing tomorrow at Havelock High School in the Crystal Coast Classic.
On Monday, students who have not taken their pictures for the yearbook should have their pictures made along with seniors needing their formals taken. See Mrs. Bilyeu if you have any questions.
Tuesday is a teacher workday and it is election day. We have many students who will be voting for the first time in this year’s election. With no school for students, this will be a great opportunity for you to engage in our democratic process.
Wednesday we will have a special schedule due to the state-required preACT being taken by the entire 10th grade class, a mock ACT for the juniors, and many select seniors taking WorkKeys state tests. Our curriculum specialists and teachers have worked to construct lessons for our 9th and 12th grade students that support them with tools needed for success.
Thursday night join us in the auditorium for the jazz, guard, and chamber concert at 7 pm. And Saturday, soccer enters the 1st round of playoffs and gymnastics celebrates senior day as the team competes in the state championship.
There’s always something taking place in Wildcat Country. Come back tonight to cheer on the Wildcats as we host the Trojans of South Johnston and celebrate senior night for our band, cheerleaders, dancers, and football team. Remember to turn your clocks back tomorrow with the end of daylight savings time. Have a great night.

Remember that your teacher is your first point of contact with questions or concerns as you review your child’s report cards with them Tuesday evening. While our students are in high school, they still very much need you looking over their shoulders and providing support as we partner together to hold them to high expectations and encourage their academic and social growth.
We are looking forward to a great week ahead. Thank you for your support and have a wonderful evening!
Oct 18
Good evening, Wildcats! You all did a fantastic job of wearing orange today to collectively stand up against bullying as we showed our support for kindness, unity, and respect. Well done! The end of the quarter is Monday and Monday is our kickoff to college application week. The CACRAO College Fair is visiting West Johnston on Monday, Oct 21 at 1pm. Seniors and juniors will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from as many as 50 colleges, universities, and trade schools. Seniors and Senior Parents: Free application week is just around the corner! Application fees to select NC colleges will be waived from Oct 21 through Oct 27 for applications submitted through the CFNC online platform. Parents, to help make sure your student is ready to submit their applications, please visit CFNC.org and help them complete the Residency Determination under the “apply to college” tab. This process requires some parent data that students don't have access to without you. It takes about 10 minutes and it must be completed in order for students to be offered in-state tuition at NC colleges.
Tuesday is a teacher workday for staff development and for teachers to finalize their quarter grades. There will be no school for students.
This week is also Red Ribbon Week. Wednesday, we want Wildcats to wear red and red ribbons to bring attention to drug awareness. Our fine arts students are performing their fall recitals this week. Come see the band perform Wednesday and the chorus perform Thursday.
Seniors Families: In the coming days or weeks, NC College Connect will be mailing letters to seniors across the state with a weighted GPA of 2.8 or higher. This partnership between NCDPI and the UNC system identifies students who meet minimum program admissions criteria and offers them the opportunity to complete a simplified application for participating colleges. Counselors recommend that students save these letters so they have the opportunity to complete the simplified application the week of October 21st when they can also get their application fee waived at 5 of the 6 participating colleges!
We look forward to seeing you tonight as we host the Spartans of SSS and crown our homecoming king and queen.

September 13
Good evening, Wildcats. This is Jennifer Swartz, principal at West Johnston. Students at West Johnston began our annual training with the Say Something app yesterday afternoon and we have already had to address individuals for not taking it seriously. This is a valuable platform provided by Sandy Hook Promise. I need your help in speaking to our children as we share resources that are available to all for reporting concerns outside of school hours that impact our safety. I need your help in speaking to our kids to ensure that during school hours they are reporting information to teachers and administrators so we can address it right away, but to recognize that false reporting can take resources and energy away from addressing time-sensitive incidents.
Also, I know that school safety concerns at other schools can create anxiety and questions at our own school. Please know that we work closely with law enforcement to follow up on issues brought to our attention.
Situations at nearby schools created heightened emotions for some of our students today. Our scheduled visit with the police canine unit caused some students to connect the dog’s presence with the lockdown at a neighboring school This was not the case. Passat, the canine, has been scheduled to visit West for many weeks and serves an important role in helping us remove substances from our campus that have no place in school.
Every teacher will be handing out progress reports Monday as we complete our first three weeks of the new school year.
The PSAT will be administered at West Johnston in October to interested students in grades 10 and 11. The PSAT is a standardized assessment closely connected to the SAT and is co- sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The cost of the PSAT is $18.00. For more information and to access the registration form, visit the homepage of our website. The deadline to register is September 15th.
We have many events taking place next week. Please visit our website for times and locations so you can cheer on our Wildcats. Thank you for your help as we work to keep our students and staff safe. Thank you and have a great weekend.
Good evening, Wildcats!

Chorus will have an open house Thursday at 7:30 pm in the cafeteria.
Underclassmen photos are Thursday, October 3. We have one more opportunity for any seniors who didn’t get their senior pictures taken this summer. Makeups for senior photos are scheduled for Friday, October 4. Go to the Tumbleston website for more information. We want all students photographed. If you are a senior, do not let a sitting fee be a barrier. See Mrs. Bilyeu for more information in room 205.
Parents, this is a reminder that all visitors must enter the building at the front entrance. If you have sports equipment or band equipment that you need to bring to your student, please park and enter the front of the building.
Sadly, our PTSO is folding due to our inability to staff the executive roles needed for this important booster club that has supported our school community in many ways over the past two years.
Monday will be our last day on our modified schedule. We will begin running our regular schedule Tuesday, September 10. Remember that your child’s teacher is your first point of contact for any questions and concerns you may have. Students will bring home their first progress reports Monday, September 16 so you can see their skill mastery in their classes.
Finally, the Wildcats are traveling to Cleveland tonight. Please put on your neon colors and join us in the stands to cheer on the Wildcats! Have a great weekend.
August 30
Good evening, Wildcats! We have had a great first week in Wildcat Country! We expect that carpool lines will continue to diminish as more students have buses assigned and more students carpool to eliminate individual vehicles. Carpool traffic moves much more quickly after buses and students depart from campus. I suggest that you wait until 2:30 to come onto campus to avoid sitting in a hot car for 40 minutes. Additionally, students who arrive to school before 6:45 can be dropped off to wait at the front door.
Parents who are ready to access Infinite Campus should complete the Google form on our website. Please be patient as Mrs. Applequist receives your individual requests and sends you your login code.
Mrs. Pullen is collaborating with the WJHS Transportation Coordinator to ensure that all students who need bus transportation are accommodated. The district is currently experiencing some technical issues, but they are working hard to resolve them and assign buses as quickly as possible.
Please note the following:
New Bus Requests: It may take up to 10 days for a bus to be assigned to a student who is making a new request.
Returning Students: If your child had a bus last year and still needs one this year, the district is prioritizing these assignments and is working to fulfill them as soon as possible.
Important: Bus assignments are managed by the Transportation Department, not by the school. Once a bus is assigned, Mrs. Pullen will call your child and provide them with a bus pass.
We will have a different schedule next week beginning Tuesday when we return following the holiday weekend. We will have a 15-minute homeroom following first block for the next 5 days. Seniors with late arrival do not have to come to homeroom next week. Please be in place in your 2nd block classes by 9:11 each day. Eat breakfast before you arrive late and do not bring your food into the building.
Please check our website and social media to stay updated with events and activities. Have a great weekend!
August 23
Good evening, Wildcats! We are looking forward to seeing you in your Camo wear at tonight’s home football game. Kickoff is at 7 pm. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased ahead of time online or at the gate.
We are excited to open the new school year Monday morning But before we do, we would love to have you join us Sunday afternoon for our prayer walk at 4 pm. We will congregate in the front foyer with our student leaders from our FCA to provide prayer over our school as we open the 2024 school year.
Many students arrive to school in carpool on the first day of school. Parents, make your morning easier by crossing the entrance to the school before 6:45 to avoid being in the second longest traffic of the year, second only to graduation traffic. Students will receive a copy of their schedules in their homeroom Monday morning. Counselors have been working on addressing as many needs as possible through submissions made in the schedule link on our website. Thank you for your patience as we work through changes.
In order to be prepared to enter the building without issue, remember to have your chromebook out and slide it across the table at the security station. Certain items may require closer inspection but our goal is to have you walk through the detector with as much of your bookbag intact as possible. If the system detects a high presence of metal, you will be redirected to a staff member to assist you. Remember that the goal is to create and maintain a safe environment for everyone.
Remember that hats and hoods are not appropriate for the school dress code and should be left at home, in your bag, or in your vehicle. The dress code also requires clothing to cover students from chest to thigh. Various rooms in the building may feel warm or cold. I strongly recommend that you have a light jacket or sweatshirt if you are cold. You will not be permitted to wrap up in a blanket.
Many students carry cell phones. Remember that students with devices should keep their cell phones put away and follow the directives of their teachers regarding their use of all technology and electronic devices in their classrooms. If a student needs to contact a parent, or if a parent needs to contact their child, we can help make needed contacts through the office.
Please visit our website to stay abreast of the events and activities taking place. We’re looking forward to seeing you early Monday morning, Wildcats! It’s going to be a great year!
August 19
Good afternoon, Wildcats! This is Jennifer Swartz with a reminder that our Open House is tomorrow night from 5-7 pm. This is a floating event to provide students and parents with the opportunity to walk your schedule and meet your teachers. Parents, even seniors, don’t let your students talk you out of attending. You are important allies for us as we support our students through the school year. Students will receive the most updated copy of their schedules at Open House. We are all new to Infinite Campus (the platform replacing Power School) and getting used to its features. A couple of things to know as we see those schedules:
Students should review their schedules for the ENTIRE school year. There will not be a drop/add period after the 1st semester.
When students complete the change request form, they will need to select their reason for requesting a schedule change. It is incredibly important that students enter this information accurately.
We are only making critical/specific schedule changes and not elective changes for students who are not happy with an elective. Specific needs for updates include a hole in your schedule, if you have already taken a course, if you need a course prerequisite, have a conflict with CCP classes and your WJHS schedule, etc.
All students and families will enter the building at the front entrance and will be screened through our security system. Please refrain from bringing any pocket knives or other personal items into the building that will have to be returned to your vehicles.
Blackberry Creek Kettle Corn will be on site at the flag poles selling various lemonades and popcorn treats for your purchase. We are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow night.
Aug 16

Wildcats, enjoy your final days of summer break. 24-25 is going to be a great year. June 25, 2024
Good evening, Wildcats! We hope you are enjoying your summer break. I need to share a few important messages with you.
One, rising seniors are reminded of the required Meningitis booster vaccine. Seniors must have this booster within the first 30 days of the new school year. Information was shared with students in their Google Classroom at the end of the school year. Parents, you can schedule appointments with your family doctors or with the Johnston County Public Health Department to help with this requirement.
General school physicals will be offered on our campus July 16, July 27, and September 7 in partnership with UNC Health Johnston. Please see our social media for times and additional dates and locations.
Johnston County Public Schools is moving to a new student information system and will no longer use the system you know as Power School after today. Because of this change, our summer counselor will only be able to answer general questions through July 10 but will not have access to schedules until late summer when the new platform is made available to staff. We appreciate your patience as you hold your questions as Johnston County Public Schools transitions to this new student information system which you will hear more about in the next months called Infinite Campus.
Finally, please continue to visit our website and social media platforms for information on parking pass sales, freshman orientation, student ID cards for non-McGee’s students, and summer workout information. If you have other questions, you can call our front office. Have a good night.

May 30, 2024
Good afternoon, parents and students. This is a special announcement regarding state testing that begins tomorrow.
In order to make sure you are where you need to be each day, please listen up. Please visit our school website to review the testing calendar if you have any questions about when you should be on campus for each exam. Friday, May 31st EOC exams will be taken in the morning and Monday, June 3 CTE exams will be taken in the morning. Benchmark and teacher-made exams will be taken in the afternoon on these days and in the morning on June 4. For anyone new to the high school testing schedule, student attendance is only required in the exam they are taking that day, and students only need to be on campus for their exams. If you are riding a bus and staying at school all day, we will have students supervised by staff in non-testing locations in the building. Please bring something with you to read as our guest wi-fi will be turned off to increase our internet bandwidth for online testing and students will not be allowed to access technology in the building for non-testing purposes.
All exams will begin each day at 7:15 and follow the schedule posted on our website. If you wish to leave school when we have called an end to ALL testing, students must have permission slips completed each day they plan to leave.Teachers and student services have these permission slips available for students to take home. Arrange your ride to be ready for you around 11:30. Because CTE exams have a shorter testing window, you will be allowed to release with a parent note when CTE and Benchmark testing has ended around 10:00am. These times are approximate so please don’t create a negative situation for your family if you can’t wait for your child to be dismissed to carpool.
Students who are on campus all day will be in testing rooms for their exams or supervised in directed areas based on their individual exam schedules.
Finally, students have been informed of testing protocols that prohibit electronic devices such as phones and smart watches, please reiterate this information with your child. These must be turned off and secured away from the student until testing has ended. If devices are found in testing situations it can cause an entire class to retake an exam due to a misadministration.

Please join us for our last PTSO meeting of the school year on Tuesday, May 21st, at 6:00 p.m. in the media center. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Please consider becoming a board member to continue this important work.
On May 23rd, we will proudly celebrate our students who have excelled academically, receiving an award for the highest average in a subject. The 11th and 12th-grade programs will be at 9:30 a.m. in the auditorium, and the 9th and 10th-grade programs will be at 1:00 p.m. Your students will be informed by their teachers if they are among the esteemed recipients of these awards.
Formal senior awards will be recognized on Thursday evening at 6:30 pm. For Seniors and families, we emphasize the importance of reporting all scholarships and awards to your counselor through the protocol shared with you. Scholarship committees do not always share this information with the school, and your counselor will not have this information to report if you have not made them aware of it. Your active involvement is crucial in this process.
In addition to our schoolwide awards ceremonies, individual programs celebrate year-end accomplishments. Please check in with your child to make sure they keep you informed of evening activities so you will be in attendance as a proud parent.
Please visit our website and social media platforms often to stay up-to-date with activities and schedules. The exam schedule will be released soon. Remember that your teacher is your first contact for any questions or concerns. You can also check your child’s grades and attendance through PowerSchool. If you need help joining PowerSchool, contact student services.
SUN Bucks is a USDA initiative to provide food assistance during the summer. Qualified families will receive a $120 EBT card per eligible child via the NC Department of Health and Human Services. The school website has more details, including how to qualify. Questions about the program should be directed to the NC Department of Health and Human Services, not the school.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to the week ahead. Go Wildcats!

Good evening Wildcats! This is a reminder that tomorrow we will have an alternate schedule in order to administer the pre-ACT to our sophomore students. This is a required test and provides counselors and teachers with important information as it simulates the required test students will take as juniors. The school uses the results of the test to identify student strengths and areas needing intervention or instruction before taking the ACT.
While sophomores take the pre-ACT, our 9th graders will work in IXL and Xello, our juniors will take a practice ACT, and some seniors will take WorkKeys while others will be using alternate platforms such as Xello.
We expect to begin testing at 7:15 and wrap up by lunch at 10:50. Get a good night’s rest and be sure to get breakfast in the morning. We’ll see you tomorrow, ready to do your best.

Continue to be mindful of traffic patterns as you come onto and leave campus. We have two lanes coming onto campus on the right side of the campus in the morning for buses, carpool, and student parking. We switch that up in the afternoon and only have one-lane traffic. Please read traffic signs and drive slowly on campus to keep everyone safe.
Enjoy the rest of your afternoon. We’ll see you tomorrow.
Wednesday, Aug 30 2023
Good afternoon, Wildcats! Thank you for a great opening to our new school year. The carpool line is already moving faster as we all begin to establish our morning routines. Please remember to exit your vehicle so that other students can be dropped off at the front of the building and we can keep the line moving. With our one entrance and exit, we need your help to get as many students out of the carpool lane as possible as quickly as possible to help everyone begin their day.
We are holding students in the front and in the cafeteria from 6:45 until 7:05 before sending them to homeroom. Any students wishing to get breakfast should tell the staff on duty and they will send them to the cafeteria. Remember that Wildcats eat free breakfast and lunch this year.

FDOC August 28, 2023
Good afternoon, Wildcats! Tomorrow we begin the new school year as we welcome the class of 2027 to their first year of high school and celebrate with the class of 2024 their last first day of class.
One of the first things to note as you pick out your clothes for the first day of school is that the Board of Education has updated the dress code policy for all Johnston County schools. A few of the highlights follow but you can see the policy online: Students should leave all hats at home in their gym bags, hoodies may be worn as long as the hood is down, clothing must cover from upper chest to mid-thigh, no crop tops or short shirts showing midriff are allowed, and shorts and skirts must be mid-thigh. I know that our students can follow the dress code because I see many of you adhering to professional dress in your jobs around the community.
All students are required to report to homeroom this week, even if they will have Late Arrival the rest of the year. Late-arrival students who would like to leave campus after homeroom will need to provide a note giving them permission to do so. To make the process easier, students may bring a single note that gives them permission for the entire week and they will receive a temporary pass allowing them to leave after homeroom through Friday, September 1st. There is a note template available in the senior Google classroom that students can print and have signed by a parent. Students must bring their notes to student services before homeroom starts Monday morning.
For those of you new to our school’s campus, we have one-way traffic onto campus in the morning. Carpool traffic will hug the right side of the campus and proceed across the front of the building in a single line while student drivers will park in the lot in their purchased spaces.
The building will open to students at 6:45 at the cafeteria and front entrance, but students will only be allowed to walk through the building once we release them to homeroom at 7:05 each day unless they are going to get breakfast. Breakfast and lunch are free to all students at West this year and we hope that you will take advantage of this service to start each day with a good breakfast.
All students will report to their homeroom classrooms at 7:05 to receive a copy of their schedules in case updates have been made. All students will follow the schedules provided by their homeroom teachers.
We are looking forward to a great school year. Remember that this afternoon at 4 pm our Fellowship of Christian Athletes student leaders, parents, staff, and faith-based community partners will participate in our annual prayer walk and seniors will be on campus at 5 pm to chalk their parking spots. We’ll see you soon!
Attention: Seniors!!
Good evening, seniors. Yes, seniors! I am calling to remind you that Tumbleston Photography Studio is scheduled to be on campus for senior drape and tuxedo yearbook photographs July 19 and July 27 by appointment. You must book an appointment using the link in your Google Classroom email. Information for signing up was already sent to your senior Google classroom but we know that many of you turn off notifications to these accounts. This is definitely NOT the year to miss any messages from the school.
Parents, please have your child log in to the Google Classroom regularly –at least once a week– to ensure that they are not missing anything. Our counselors will share information about scholarship opportunities, senior field trips, parking pass information, and more. We post a good deal of information to social media but that is front-facing to the world and may not always be suitable to be shared.
Questions that you and your child have should be directed to the appropriate staff members at school as some information that is seen by others on social media may not be reliable. If you are unsure who to contact, you can always contact the main office as we will be staffed through the summer Monday through Thursday.
We are excited to see you take part in the first official senior activity of your final year at West as you sit for your senior portraits. If neither of these dates works for your summer schedule, we will have a makeup day during the fall when school is back in session. Have a great summer, Wildcats!
June 8, 2023
Good evening, Wildcats! You made it through the final day of school! Thank you for your perseverance and hard work to achieve the success you are enjoying now.
We are excited to welcome our 2023 graduates and their loved ones to campus tomorrow morning for our first-ever morning graduation ceremony. Our front gate will open at 7 am for parking but our stadium will not open until 8 am for seating. All guests will be going through the Open Gate weapons system to enter the stadium. Please bring as little as possible with you so that you do not hold up the line since we are expecting 3000 people on campus to see our class of 2023 graduate.
Remember that all seats require a ticket and children who are able to walk require their own ticket. Handicapped seating is available at the top of our bleachers. We will have water for sale for $1 per bottle. If you require assistance of any kind, please look for a staff member. Most staff members will be wearing white t-shirts that help identify them as staff.
Class of 2023, we are all very proud of you and are looking forward to celebrating this significant milestone with you tomorrow morning. To our underclassmen, especially our class of 2024, these years that seem so long pass quickly. Remember to make the most of them. Enjoy your summer and we’ll see you August 28.
June 6, 2023
Good afternoon, Wildcats.

Thank you and have a safe summer!
June 2, 2023
Good evening, Wildcats! I’m looking forward to seeing you tonight at the Senior Sunset sponsored by some of your parents. By this time next Friday, more than 300 of you will have turned your tassels and be named graduates of West Johnston High School. As we move toward the end of testing, do all you can to prepare to demonstrate excellence. Many of us look back on our high school years and recognize that we could have done more with a little more effort. With you, Wildcats, those opportunities are still available. Take advantage of the chance to be as successful as possible by preparing yourself for your final exams which represent 20% of your overall grade.
Remember that cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed to be with you when you test. Your teachers and test administrators will provide you with instructions on turning them off and securing them away from you to avoid a test misadministration.
Be sure to check in with your teachers to make sure that you do not have any fines or items owed to the school. Teachers have a list where this information is being organized, so check in with your teachers.
Finally, remember to bring a note from home if you are able to leave at the conclusion of formal testing.
The end of the year is really upon us. Thank you for a great year. If you haven’t already done so, please be sure to check out the final episode of Wildcat News as the seniors and staff wrap up their year.
Have a great weekend. We’ll see you Monday!
May 31, 2023
This is a reminder that tomorrow is a regular school day and the final day for regular attendance. We will be operating on a regular schedule. Seniors who are exempt from a teacher-made exam will not have to sit in that room tomorrow, but are expected to be in attendance in all other classes, otherwise they will be counted absent.
Parents, please review the exam schedule that is posted on our school website. If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher as your first point of contact. Students, study, and do your best. We’ll see you tomorrow for our last day of class. Have a great night.
May 19, 2023
Good evening, Wildcats. While we are excited to welcome students from across the county at West Johnston tonight for the alternative prom, I have a more serious matter to share with you. This afternoon a student wrote a threatening message on a men’s bathroom stall that was quickly found and reported. This message has not been substantiated but we will have additional law enforcement on campus Monday.
Attempting to create fear in our school community and disrupt the educational environment is a serious issue and must not be treated lightly. Please take a moment to speak with your children about the seriousness of any threat and the need to communicate any concerns to an adult immediately.
Next week is our final full week of classes before we move into exam week. We have spring athletic awards Monday evening. Tuesday Dr. Kemp and Ms. Earp are holding a European trip meeting, football has a spring game, and chorus hosts its final concert. Wednesday, dance has a concert and awards. Thursday, junior and senior class awards will be held at 9:30 in the auditorium and freshman and sophomore awards will be held at 1:00. Teachers are calling parents of students who are receiving awards. Thursday night the counselors will present senior scholarship awards in the auditorium. Friday is the senior trip to Carowinds.
