Dual Language
Dual Language Immersion in Johnston County Public Schools
In partnership with Participate, Johnston County Public Schools offers a Spanish immersion education for elementary and middle school students. Our Dual Language Immersion program serves to:
Provide an opportunity for JCPS Dual Language students to earn North Carolina's Seal of Biliteracy/NCDPI World Language Endorsement
Offer Dual Language option through Conexiones Course to sixth through eighth graders at middle schools in feeder pattern with elementary DL programs
Extend the availability of World Language course credits through CDM to middle school students served by Dual Language programs through eighth grade
Extend access to higher level Spanish Language courses to high school students considering Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Spanish courses
Benefits of the Bilingual Brain (English or Spanish)
Dual Language Immersion serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade at one of three JCPS elementary schools: Cooper Academy, Polenta Elementary, and Selma Elementary schools. Selma Middle and Swift Creek Middle Schools offer DLI to 6th-8th graders to students in their feeder pattern elementary schools. Rising 6th grade students from Cooper Academy who can provide their own transportation may request reassignment to either Selma Middle School or Swift Creek MIddle School in order to continue studying Spanish.
Adopting the recommended progression of Participate Dual Language programming below, Johnston County Public Schools offers Conexiones courses in grades 6th-8th. At the completion of 8th grade, students may enter 9th grade with high school credits for Spanish. Rising 9th grade DLI students can continue to study Spanish through the International Baccalaureate programs at Smithfield-Selma High School by applying to the Diploma and Career-related programs.
