At the May 2023 Regular Session Board of Education meeting, the March Character Education Award recipients were recognized by the Board. Recipients are nominated by their teachers for one of five character traits: Compassion, Integrity, Self-Discipline, Courage, and Dependability.
MADELINE XALIN ZAVALA Innovation Academy at South Campus 6th Grade DEPENDABILITY- Keeping your promises Madeline Xalin Zavala is an exceptional student at the Innovation Academy at South Campus. While she displays many of the character traits, Madeline is a great representation of what dependability is.
As a 6th grader, she is a quiet leader, but it is clear that she has what it takes to shine each day. She always shows kindness towards her peers and teachers in all that she does. If a classmate is struggling, Madeline is always the first one to help with whatever they need.
She holds her friends accountable for their actions and always encourages them to be their best selves, even when the content is difficult. If her classmates need extra support, she is the first one to volunteer her time to help them out. She always has a smile on her face and never lets anything bring her down.
ELICIA ANDERSON
Johnston County Career & Technical Leadership Academy
13th Grade Super Senior
SELF-DISCIPLINE- Doing your best in all situations
Elicia Anderson is a Super Senior at Johnston County Career & Technical Leadership Academy (CTLA). Elicia came to CTLA as a shy, introverted first-year student, who gradually transformed into a beautiful butterfly. She never gave up, is an asset to CTLA, and an excellent role model for her peers.
The faculty and staff treasure the moments shared with Elicia and how she brightens any space she enters.
Elicia will graduate from CTLA on May 18th, and has accepted a position to join the team at Grifols. She will continue her education at ECU, pursuing a degree in industrial technology while working at Grifols.
AMANDA FORMISANO

INTEGRITY- Being honest in all things
Amanda Formisano honestly embodies several of the character traits, but in choosing just one, it would have to be integrity. She is a leader in many aspects of the school framework, and is respected by staff and her peers. Amanda works with the same dedication in front and behind the scenes in multiple school activities, aiding students in times of need.
She is always available and advocates fairness for everyone. If one speaks of courage, Amanda stands for what is right, even if it is not the popular posture taken by others. Full of honesty, she goes about her daily routine looking for ways to help others.
TRISTEN WRIGHT
Johnston County Virtual Academy
6th Grade
RESPECT- Understanding that all people have value as human beings
Tristen Wright is an exceptional student at the Johnston County Public Schools Virtual Academy. This young man has displayed respect in multiple situations this school year. He is a true leader and role model for the other students, and has maintained consistency by being a dependable and respectful student.
His dependability, integrity, and responsibility have really gone above and beyond. Tristen's classmates hold him in high esteem. He respectfully ensures that his peers are treated fairly, and that they treat each other with fairness. He displays compassion for the thoughts and feelings of others, and that is evident in the positive relationships he has with others.

Kayla is a model student at Choice Plus Academy. She is a shining example of how to appropriately respond to taking responsibility for your education. Kayla remains focused on completing her course work to keep her on track towards graduation.
