December Character Education Awards

Character Education is a priority for Johnston County Public Schools. Through a variety of means, schools in the district promote character education through rewards, bulletin boards, presentations, and interactive lessons. Each month the Johnston County Board of Education recognizes students who have demonstrated good character. Below are the students recognized for December.


Tinsley Pate 

5th Grade - Glendale-Kenly Elementary     

Self Discipline - Doing your best in all situations

Tinsley Pate stands out as a shining example of dedication, responsibility, and unwavering commitment to personal and academic excellence.

Pate's consistent display of self-discipline has not only contributed to her own growth, but has also set a positive standard for her peers. Whether facing academic challenges, extracurricular activities, or personal responsibilities, she alway exhibits a remarkable ability to stay focused, prioritize tasks, and maintain a strong work ethic.

Beyond the classroom, Pate's involvement in various extracurricular activities showcases her exceptional organizational skills, and her commitment to personal development.

Her exemplary behavior extends to her interactions with peers and teachers. Pate is known for her respectful demeanor, effective time management, and the ability to navigate challenges with grace and determination. Her peers look up to her as a role model, and her teachers appreciate the positive influence she brings to the classroom environment.


Jake Barnes 

5th Grade - Micro Elementary     

Self Discipline - Doing your best in all situations

Jake Barnes is a young man who displays every positive character trait, every single day! He consistently demonstrates a love for helping others, regardless of any situation presented to him, his peers, or other adults.  Barnes' classmates feel comfortable with going to him for help,  proving that he is a trusted, rational, and natural problem solver and great classmate.! 

Not only does Barnes show self discipline, compassion, and that he is a great problem solver, he is also extremely respectful. There are so many students in the 5th grade who call him a great friend.  Barnes is truly one of a kind, and his teachers know that he will go far in life and accomplish many great things.


Preston Thompson

8th Grade - North Johnston Middle     

Compassion - Treating others as you would like to be treated

Preston Thompson's teachers and peers describe him as dependable, responsible, and courageous. One specific character trait that he exemplifies consistently is compassion. 

He works hard to uplift and encourage his peers, teachers, and anyone he encounters. Thompson is quick to share a kind word, compliment, or smile with others. He can also be seen helping others who may be struggling. Thompson's teachers and administrators describe him as a kind student, with integrity and a great sense of humor. 

He serves as the president of the National Junior Honor Society at North Johnston Middle . Aside from being a high academic achiever in the classroom, Thompson maintains a positive outlook despite any challenges that he may have faced. He is a loyal friend to his peers, and is always there for them. 


Abigail Workman

5th Grade - Pine Level Elementary     

Responsibility - Being accountable for your own actions

Abigail Workman is a student that has worked so hard to exemplify good character traits this school year. She shows respect in the classroom when she displays a genuine interest in listening to what her classmates have to say. She is open-minded and respects the viewpoints of others.  

Abigail shows responsibility as she is working hard to complete her work in class. As she continues to grow more and more responsible, she is finding success in the classroom on a daily basis, and leading others to do the same. 

She shows compassion to other students when she offers to help them with an assignment or be their partner if they don’t have one. She does not exclude anyone and tries to be friends with all students. Abigail has worked very hard this year to be the best student that she can be and Pine Level Elementary is so proud of her.

Shaun Smith

12th Grade - North Johnston High     

Patriotism - Loving your country and standing up for the purposes for which it was founded

Shaun Smith is a Deputy Cadet Commander in the North Johnston High ROTC. His teachers describe him as dependable and respectful.  Smith's leadership, dedication to the ROTC program, and love of country are laudable and evidenced in the work that he has done at the school. 

In November, Smith led an 18-person formation to march in the JCPS Veterans Day Ceremony before a crowd of approximately 500 people. Also in November, he successfully led his Drill Rifle team to a 2nd place finish at the Terry Sanford Drill Meet in Fayetteville. Smith contributed to an overall 3rd place finish for the entire competition. 

He is a competitive member of the cross country team, and  the wrestling team.  Smith was recently accepted to Belmont Abbey College for beginning Fall 2024.
