Read Across America

Children all across Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) celebrated Read Across America Week March 4-8, 2024. Festivities were held throughout the week across the school district to promote literacy and a love of reading among children, and to encourage them to explore the world of books and reading.

Volunteers from the community, JCPS high schoolers, local pageant winners, and law enforcement partners took time to read to students in support of Read Across America Week. Other special guests included School Board Chair Lyn Andrews and JCPS Superintendent Dr. Eric C. Bracy. Chair Andrews read to children at Polenta Elementary, and Superintendent Bracy read, and sometimes sang, Pete The Cat to the fourth graders at Micro Elementary.

Four Oaks Elementary held a Read Across America spirit week that included Pajama Day, Read with a Buddy, and Reading Fun in the Sun. On Friday, the fun-filled week concluded with the first ever character parade. With the assistance of Four Oaks Police, families lined Main Street as the children marched around dressed as their favorite book character.

Educators and students alike were all smiles during the various events and activities throughout the week. “Read Across America is fun and a great way to learn to read,” exclaimed Samuel Morris, a student at Four Oaks Elementary. Many students and educators expressed the same sentiments.

Riverwood Elementary was full of energy and excitement as students and staff paraded inside the school, showcasing their favorite books, dressed as their favorite characters. The event featured Peter Pan, The Cat in the Hat, Sonic the Hedgehog, Willie Wonka, and Things 1, 2, and 3.

“It is always great seeing students and staff throughout our district, state, and nation join together in celebrating reading. It is awesome to see the students excited to show their love of reading!” stated Riverwood Elementary Media Coordinator and parade coordinator Angela West.

Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association, and guided by a committee of educators, NEA's Read Across America is the nation's largest celebration of reading. Read Across America Week is a nationwide initiative that encourages communities to come together to celebrate the love of reading, inspired by the birthday of renowned children's author Dr. Seuss.

As the district continues to place emphasis on reading, events such as Read Across America and Battle of the Books are becoming more and more popular as the district’s primary reading focused events. The events often showcase JCPS student’s passion for reading, and support the district initiatives to increase reading proficiency for all K-12 learners.
