Ms. Tara Haire is the JCPS Certified Employee of the Month for February 2025!
In her second year as a 2nd-grade teacher at Four Oaks Elementary, Haire recently displayed the attributes of someone who leads with the heart when she stepped in to save the life of a child.
Though likely scared, she portrayed courage and became a hero. This act of selflessness and bravery went far beyond the classroom, showing that true leadership is not just about teaching academic subjects, but also about caring deeply for the well-being of others.
Her quick thinking, compassion, and ability to remain calm in the face of danger undoubtedly made a lasting impact on both the child’s life and the entire school community.
As the Certified Employee of the Month, we are thrilled to highlight Ms. Haire. Below she shares some insight into her education journey, and why she chose teaching as a career.
Why did you choose the role of teaching?
I have always had a passion for helping others, and I believe that education is crucial for shaping the future. Inspiring kids to work toward their full potential is a deeply rewarding experience for me. When my students have “aha’ moments I am proud because I had a part in making those connections happen.
I have had many influential people within my family who have influenced and helped me to pursue teaching. Without them, I would not be where I am today in this wonderful career.
What has this profession taught you?
What I have learned in teaching is that no day will be the same and you never know what might happen, so always be prepared. It has also taught me that you have to be adaptable and able to think on your feet in any situation that may arise. Being adaptable and being able to empathize with your students goes a long way. If you always do your absolute best, God will take care of the rest.
How do you create an environment for your students to feel successful as they learn?
School should be a safe and nurturing environment, especially within the classroom. I think it is important to build a strong and dependable foundation in your classroom. This shows that you not only care about the well being of your students, but it also shows the passion you have for your job.
How do you plan to build on your award winning strategies?
I will add this wonderful recognition to my tool box and use it as a motivation for myself. As this is only my second year teaching, I have a lot left to learn but I am blessed with the best mentor and support system at Four Oaks Elementary.
As an educator, why is it important to build relationships with your students? How do you do that in your classroom?
Prioritizing building those meaningful relationships, no matter how small, is the key to having those moments of bonding. Those connections make a difference to the kids and help in gaining trust and respect for them to flourish and succeed.
My class motto is “Progress over Perfection”. No one is perfect and everyone is going to make mistakes however, there is always something to be learned when they happen. My students and I continue to make progress towards our goals, using the mistakes as learning opportunities. We are committed to excellence in everything we do within the classroom, and outside of the classroom.
As you continue as an educator, what are your future goals as it relates to education?
This is only my second year as a teacher, and I look forward to continuing my journey in education. I have a lot more years to serve in this amazing role, and a lot more wonderful kids to teach. I am excited to keep shaping the minds of the future!
What advice would you give to those thinking about a career in education?
Teaching is a demanding profession however, the benefits are so rewarding. Seeing the impact and the growth your students make in the short time frame you have with them is so fulfilling.
Being passionate about what you are doing will help you navigate those sometimes crucial and challenging moments. There is no greater reward than getting through those challenges and excelling because of them alongside your students. The “aha” moments are what make it all worthwhile, and always remember, "Progress over Perfection".
