Character Education is a priority for Johnston County Public Schools. Through a variety of means, schools in the district promote character education through rewards, bulletin boards, presentations, and interactive lessons. Each month the Johnston County Board of Education recognizes students who have demonstrated good character. Below are the students recognized for February 2025.


Luke Barbour

5th Grade - Benson Elementary

Respect - Understanding that all people have value as human beings

Luke BarbourLuke Barbour is an exemplary student who consistently demonstrates respect, responsibility, and a strong commitment to academic excellence.

He embodies the true meaning of diligence by always putting forth his best effort in everything he does.

Barbour arrives at class each day fully prepared, ready to engage with new material, and eager to expand his knowledge.

His enthusiasm for learning is evident in the way he actively participates in class discussions, asks thoughtful questions, and contributes to hands-on experiments with curiosity and excitement.

He quickly grasps new ideas and demonstrates strong problem-solving skills, making him a standout student.


Yahaira "YaYa" Martinez Romero

8th Grade - Benson Middle

Perseverance - Working hard and not giving up

Yahaira Martinez Romero is a Character Education Award recipient for perseverance.Yahaira "YaYa" Martinez Romero unwavering perseverance shines brightly, most notably in her academic achievements.

Facing challenges, she demonstrated remarkable determination in mastering the complexities of mathematics with a great deal of success.

Yahaira's successful exit from the ESL program showcases her persistent dedication to learning and overcoming obstacles.

She is also a leader in her classroom often helping classmates with classwork. YaYa has a positive attitude regardless of the task, and always shares her warm smile with peers and teachers.

Her journey is an example of how perseverance, mixed with a little hard work, can lead to remarkable success!


Sawyer Driver

5th Grade - Corinth-Holders Elementary

Dependability - Keeping your promises

Sawyer Driver of Corinth-Holders Elementary is a Character Education Award recipient for dependability.Sawyer Driver is a dependable young man who consistently goes above and beyond what is expected of him!

Every morning, he arrives early to help gather trash, reset centers, and assist with any and all needs to help the library run smoothly. His commitment and dedication make him an invaluable asset in the library and in our school.

Whether it's organizing books or helping patrons find what they need, Sawyer's reliability and positive attitude create a welcoming environment, and his contributions are deeply appreciated by everyone he assists.


Kaylee Simpson

5th Grade - Four Oaks Elementary

Kaylee Simpson is a February Character Education Award recipient.Kaylee Simpson consistently demonstrates exceptional character in the classroom, during lunch, and on the playground.

Simpson is a hard-working student who isn’t afraid of facing a challenge. She is passionate about her learning and always submits her best work.

Whether interacting with her best friends, fellow classmates or adults Simpson is always respectful, kind and polite. She is compassionate and willing to help whenever and wherever needed.

Simpson is a well-rounded student with a remarkable commitment to her learning, and she is helpful to others and befriends virtually everyone she encounters.


Claire Mizner

8th Grade - Four Oaks Middle

Self Discipline - Doing your best in all situations

Claire Mizner from Four Oaks Middle is a February Character Education Award recipient.Claire Mizner is a shining example of self-discipline, consistently demonstrating a commitment to doing her best in all situations.

Whether tackling challenging assignments, participating in group activities, or managing her daily responsibilities, she always gives her full effort and maintains a positive attitude.

Mizner approaches her work with determination, ensuring that every task she undertakes reflects her highest standards. She has an impressive ability to stay focused and resist distractions, even in less structured environments.

With her excellent time management skills, Mizner is able to balance academic and extracurricular activities effectively. In group settings, she contributes thoughtfully, ensuring she is an active and reliable team member.


Cody Stephenson

8th Grade - Meadow School

Dependability - Keeping your promises

Cody Stephenson from Meadow School is a February Character Education Award recipient.Cody Stephenson is an incredibly hardworking student who always comes to class prepared and ready to learn. He is always willing to assist other students with assignments and enjoys being able to help his teachers anytime we need him.

Stephenson's kindness shines through his ability to collaborate effectively with other students. He is accepting of others and patient when working with his peers.

Actively involved with our FFA program, he is also a member of our soccer team. Stephenson is an absolute pleasure to teach, and we always know we can count on him to lead the way for others.


Emma Pearce

12th Grade - South Johnston High

Responsibility - Being accountable for your own actions

Emma Pearce is a February Character Education Award recipient.Emma Pearce exemplifies all of the 12 Student Character Education traits! According to Mrs. Sabrina Dees, “one trait that stands out the most on a daily basis is that of responsibility.”

Pearce works extremely hard to go above and beyond to put her best foot forward in all she does. She balances school work and her extra curricular activities with a smile and positive attitude.

Pearce is honest and compassionate with students and adults. As the current Miss South Johnston High, she strives to ensure that all of the staff feel appreciated. She routinely provides them with words of encouragement and appreciation treats.

Pearce developed and maintains a blessing box where students can receive food and personal hygiene products any time after hours.
