Ms. Joyner shared her reason for choosing to be an educator and what she has learned over the past seven years as a teacher.

Why did you choose the role of teaching?

When I was a student in Johnston County Public Schools , the teachers and staff members inspired me in so many ways. Their dedication, kindness, and encouragement shaped who I am today. It’s my goal to have that same kind of impact on my students - inspiring, uplifting, and helping them grow just as those educators did for me.

Throughout my life, I've been drawn to the idea of making a positive impact on others. Over the past seven years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching, a journey that I like to think chose me, rather than the other way around.

Teaching has allowed me to not only share knowledge but also to nurture, guide, and inspire others. Each day in the classroom reminds me of why I love what I do—helping people grow, learn, and reach their full potential is a truly rewarding experience.

What has this profession taught you?

I have learned that teaching requires time and energy beyond the classroom. Teaching is a dynamic, rewarding experience, but it takes a lot of effort and care to truly support students' growth, both academically and personally.

How do you create an environment for your students to feel successful as they learn?

All classes are unique. You have to be willing to meet your students where they are in order to foster a learning environment where they feel comfortable enough to give their best effort each day. I have found that setting clear expectations and maintaining order is key to keeping students focused and safe.

How do you plan to build on your award winning strategies?

I am truly thankful for the recognition! I am a humble person and understand that learning must be a lifelong journey. Whether it's improving subject knowledge, learning new teaching methods, or staying up-to-date on educational trends, ongoing growth is essential for teaching.

As an educator, why is it important to build relationships with your students? How do you do that in your classroom?

Strong teacher-student relationships not only help in academic achievement, but also create a supportive environment for emotional and social growth. I often remind my students about how I was once in their shoes and the challenges that I had to overcome to be successful and reach this stage in my life.

As you continue as an educator, what are your future goals as it relates to education?

Throughout the seven years that I have been teaching, my passion for education has only grown stronger. I am committed to continuing my journey in the education field, as I believe in the power of learning and the impact it has on students' lives. I look forward to further contributing to the development and success of future generations.

What advice would you give to those thinking about a career in education?

Teaching isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” career. Sharing ideas and learning from others will help you grow in your own practice. Education is always evolving, so be prepared to continue learning.

Keep your passion alive, and don’t be afraid to bring your unique strengths to the classroom!

Lastly, it is important to maintain a healthy work-life balance and prioritize self-care so you can continue to show up for your students in the best way possible.
