A special thank you to Representatives Donna White and Howard Penny for visiting Johnston County Public Schools and taking part in the inaugural "Bring Your Legislator to School" day! Cleveland High was bustling with energy and many students and staff members were excited to engage in very meaningful conversations.
2024 JCPS Flame for Learning Teacher of the Year Melissa Pearce, who is a teacher at Cleveland High, coordinated the great event, bridging the gap between legislative leadership and JCPS students.

Volunteers will listen to and encourage students as they develop their reading skills. No experience is required, but you will need to register and be a volunteer with JCPS before you begin.

Sarah Crews is the next April 2024 Character Education Award Recipient!
Crews is in the fifth grade at Princeton Elementary, and was recognized for her dependability as a student and as an individual. She is a valuable member of the flag team, Battle of the Books and Science Olympiad.
To be dependable means to be trustworthy and reliable, Sarah exemplifies this daily through her actions, even when no one is watching.

Congratulations to Jaida Padilla, an April 2024 Character Education Award recipient! 🥳
In 8th grade at Smithfield Middle, Padilla was recognized for Compassion. She is the epitome of a role model, is well behaved, and has a penchant for excellence. Padilla continues to set high standards for herself and works assiduously to achieve her goals.
She is also an active member of the school’s chorus and was selected to participate in the district's all-county chorus due to her superb vocal talent. 🎶

Congratulations to James Faggart, Jr. who was named JCPS 2023-2024 Outstanding First Year Teacher of the Year! 👏
A resource/inclusion teacher at Corinth Holders High, Faggart was given the honor during a celebration at Cleveland High that recognized all 34 nominees.
The two finalists are Smithfield Middle’s D'Andra Garcia-Duhaney and McGee’s Crossroads Elementary’s Alyssa Martens.
JCPS is proud of to every first year educator that was nominated by their administrators! 🤩
Congratulations to Pat Smith a JCPS 2024 Hall of Fame inductee!
After an illustrious career as a baseball player and coach , Smith joined South Johnston High in 1988, where he continued his accolades winning five conference championships and leading the Trojans to a 25-3 record, and the 3A State Championship in 1990.
What a great addition to the JCPS Athletic Hall of Fame!⚾

Alika Pa'u received an April 2024 Character Education Award for Compassion!
A second grader at South Smithfield Elementary, he is the kind of student that shares his thoughts and opinions when asked to do so, but is always quick to listen to others. Knowing that everyone is treated fairly and has a chance to speak up is something that is very important to him. Shy at first, his personality shines through with his friends.

Alexandra Orozco is a April 2024 Character Education Award recipient!
Recognized for Compassion, this Smithfield-Selma High senior is empathetic and always tries to see life from the perspective of others. This year, she has been amazingly helpful as a teacher assistant in student services.
Orozco is one of those rare people who can sense needs before they are spoken, and has been a huge asset in making sure the Spanish speaking students are able to navigate the ins and outs of high school.

Congratulations to Lynwood McLamb on becoming a JCPS 2024 Athletic Hall of Fame Legacy nominee!
He was a stand out athlete in high school at Four Oaks School. He became a teacher at Meadow School, where he coached baseball and basketball. From 1969 until he retired McLamb taught at Four Oaks Elementary/Middle School.

Carolina Romero is our April 2024 Classified Employee of the Month!🎉
Romero is a teacher assistant at Princeton Elementary and spends her day ensuring that all families feel a part of the school community. Her ability to translate and communicate with Spanish-speaking families has transformed relationships and increased communication throughout the building.

JCPS held a groundbreaking celebration for Swift Creek Elementary!🏫
It was a momentous occasion filled with excitement and high hopes for the children of Johnston County, and their futures. Community members, local stakeholders, and JCPS team members were on hand for the historical event.
The school is slated to open in Fall of 2024 and will serve just over 900 students from Pre-K through fifth grade. It will also make an immediate impact on overcrowding due to the county's exponential growth.
As part of the 2022 Bond Referendum, voters approved the new construction. JCPS is proud to partner with JC Board of Commissioners and other stakeholders in this latest endeavor.

Anna Marbry has been named a JCPS 2024 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee!
A South Johnston High alum, dominated in several sports during her four years. During her career at UNC-Wilmington she set ten school records and became the first NCAA Division I All-American in school history.
