kids carving pumpkins in classroom

The fifth grade students have been working hard at their sequence writing.  A fun activity that we like to do is to ask them to write about how to carve a pumpkin.  First, we start with connecting the writing to our/their background knowledge.  Then, we use a graphic organizer and discuss the transition words that are important to sequencing; first, next, then, last.  Next, is the rough draft with edits and revisions.  Finally, is their final copy of the writing.  After all of the writing is done, they get to carve the pumpkin how they wrote their paper.  It is a fun activity that all of the students enjoy and we enjoy, year after year!
