watson

oday, our 4th graders had the privilege of hearing from Mr. Haywood Watson, a trailblazer in Johnston County’s history. As one of the first Black students to integrate North Johnston High School in 1965, Mr. Watson shared his powerful story, answered student questions, and led thought-provoking discussions about courage, perseverance, and education.

In 4th grade social studies, students explore key events in North Carolina’s history, making Mr. Watson’s firsthand account an incredible learning experience. His visit helped bring history to life and gave students a deeper understanding of the impact of desegregation in our community.

Beyond his historic role, Mr. Watson dedicated his career to shaping young minds as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal across Johnston County schools. Even after retirement, he continued to support education through teacher observations and interim administration roles.

We are grateful for the wisdom and inspiration he shared with our students today!
