This month we are celebrating diverse cultures and encouraging our students to be open-minded about the world around them. Beginning September 15th through October 13th, we will celebrate and learn about Hispanic Heritages from around the world. Throughout the month students will be exposed to music, culture, art, traditions, and so much more. Be sure to check out what we have planned.
→ Hispanic music, played as students arrive on Friday mornings, will expose students to forms of expression, learn about others’ perspectives, and students will be able to make connections to their own heritage.
→ Throughout each week, on select days, students will be able to participate in morning announcements. Students who are either from one of the 21 Spanish speaking countries or have a parent that is, will be encouraged to share a fun fact about their culture with our school community. Students will become teachers and will have the opportunity to teach others about their culture.
→ Each class is encouraged to participate in developing a cultural corner in their classrooms. Students can bring in items or pictures to display from their culture. Building a mindset that ALL student voices matter is the first step to academic success.
→ During the week of October 9th-October 13th, students will close out the celebration with a FUN dress up week.
Good Afternoon Dolphin Families,
This is Mr. McLamb with a few Carpool and App reminders and tips. This year, Johnston County has switched to an all in one shop for parents for communication and updates. Every school this year is using the JCPS app to deliver on time updates and notifications. Teachers use Rooms (found in the JCPS app) to communicate directly with you. If you did not get connected to your child's room account or the JCPS app please refer to this help page which includes tutorial videos and how tos.

For Carpool, we want to remind families that you can not make a left turn directly exiting our parking lot. Cars are not permitted to park in the parking lot and then join carpool. This creates an unfair situation as well as unsafe conditions during carpool. Please make sure your carpool tags are hanging from the rear view mirror so it is easily visible for our staff. We would love for all children be loaded and unloaded from the passenger side of the car for safety. Please make necessary changes to car seat arrangements so this can occur. If there is not a carpool tag displayed, an ID check will take place to maintain our safety procedures.
Thank you all for adhering to our guidelines to help us keep all kids safe.
It is a great day to be a Dolphin!
JCPS CLOSED FOR ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF THURSDAY, AUGUST 31
Due to the impending inclement weather conditions caused by Hurricane Idalia, Johnston County Public Schools will be closed for all students, staff, and visitors tomorrow, Thursday, August 31. This includes all after school activities on Thursday. The district will operate under Condition 1 of our Inclement Weather Procedures. Weather Conditions can be found online by visiting www.johnston.k12.nc.us/weatherconditions.
This decision has been made out of an abundance of caution and per the guidance of local and state emergency service officials.
We hope that all of our students, staff, and families stay safe, and we thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we navigate this severe weather event.
We had a wonderful first day back to school and want to thank all of our students, staff, and families for working together to make today a success. We want to share a few reminders to keep things running smoothly in the days and weeks ahead.
In the first few weeks of school, it’s typical for our bus routes and carpool lanes to run a bit slower than normal. Our drivers are getting used to new routes, there are more drivers on the road, our students are getting into a routine, and most importantly - we are focused on keeping everyone safe at all times. We ask that you keep these things in mind if our arrival and departure procedures are moving more slowly than we anticipate. If your student is a bus rider, we encourage you to download the EduLog Parent Portal App, for real time information on where your student's bus is on their route.
We also want to remind our families that the majority of our schools are offering free breakfast and lunch this school year. All schools, with the exception of Clayton High, Cleveland Elementary, Cleveland High, Corinth Holders High, and Powhatan Elementary, will offer free breakfast and lunch through the Community Eligibility Provision. Families with students attending non-qualifying schools are encouraged to complete a Free and Reduced meal application to receive benefits for this school year. This form, which can be found on the district website, assists our schools in many other services throughout the year, and can be beneficial for our families and students.
Lastly, please be reminded that all of our school campuses now have a weapons detection system in place at the entrances of our school. All students, staff, and guests will be expected to pass through the system upon arrival to our campuses.
This first week of school is a busy time, with a lot of excitement for our students. Please be reminded that attendance will be taken daily. However attendance calls for students who are marked tardy or absent will not resume until next week.
We thank you in advance for your help in making this a great school year.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This is SSES with a few reminders before we have dismissal this afternoon. Students can not be checked out after 3:15pm. We ask for grace with buses today as drivers are learning their routes and keep safety as their priority. Carpool remains a single line only. Please do not attempt to pass cars in carpool. Dismissal begins at 3:45pm. Parents are not permitted to park and walk up. Thank you for your understanding as we aim to provide a safe dismissal for all.
Good Afternoon Dolphin Families,
This is Chad McLamb, Principal of South Smithfield Elementary, with a few tips and announcements. We can't wait to welcome back every student to our campus. Parents, you are welcome to walk your student in the first day. We do not unload cars until 8:25am in the morning carpool. For afternoon carpool, we begin at 3:45pm.
Please make sure all student info cards have been returned to the school tomorrow so we have a way to reach you in case of emergency. If your phone number changes throughout the year, please let our front office and your child's teacher know.
This year our main form of communication is through "Rooms". This is a part of the JCPS app but you will need your child's teacher to send you a code. This is a secure messaging system (much like Dojo). There you will get a weekly newsletter with events and what standards we are teaching.
Please ensure your child's teacher knows how they are getting home the first week of school. Because we are a one to one school, personal devices are not permitted on campus. We don't allow laptops, iPads, or personal Chromebooks. Smart Devices and Phones are not permitted outside a child's book bag at school. These devices are a distraction to our learning environment. If devices are out during the day, administration will confiscate them and call the parent to pick them up.
To protect our learning space, we ask that you make sure your child does not bring toys to school.
We can't wait for an incredible year with you and your family.
Have a great evening and Go Dolphins!
