Unified Spartans hosted a Friendsgiving feast on Tuesday, November 26, 2024. Students with and without intellectual disabilities joined together over a potluck meal. It was hosted in the Smithfield-Selma High School media center and it was a full day filled with laughter and smiles. The reason for the event was to gather with Unified friends and celebrate how much Unified as a whole has grown. Unified Spartans began in 2018. Since then, numerous events and activities have led to meaningful friendships for students with and without intellectual disabilities.
It was also a chance for Unified Spartans to join together and laugh. Games included finding the turkey feather. Unified leaders hid feathers around the media center and encouraged partners to search together. The winners were prized with a gift card. A bowling game had students roll with laughter! Chart paper was available to write examples of gratitude.
This year’s twist on the event was to encourage international recipes. Among the traditional turkey and ham, Honduran tacos and Jerk Chicken were enjoyed by all.
