Why did you choose the role of teaching special education students?
I chose the role of a special education teacher to make a difference in the lives of children that cannot always advocate for themselves. Academic or social skills may be more challenging for these students, but I believe that every child can learn when given the appropriate tools and modifications to be successful.
What has this profession taught you?
I have learned that the value of a student’s education cannot be measured. I know that every minute that I have with a child is a precious learning opportunity. The students teach me something new everyday, and I’m grateful to be in a position where I can continue to learn and grow with them.
How do you create an environment for your students to feel successful as they learn?
I am continuously reflecting on my teaching strategies, my students, and their needs. I want to ensure that what I am offering as an educator is tailored to meet the needs of each of my students. I want my students to feel valued when they enter the classroom, and know that I have their best interests at heart.
How do you plan to build on your award winning strategies?
Relationships, reflection and resilience guide my path each day, and I will continue to build on these strategies as long as I am an educator.
As an educator, why is it important to build relationships with your students? How do you do that in your classroom?
Children must first trust you and know that you believe in them before you can begin influencing their academic minds. In my classroom, my students know that my motto is, “Be a Light.” Not only do I try to be a light to each of my students, but I also encourage them to be lights in all that they say and do.
As you continue as an educator, what are your future goals as it relates to education?
I have loved my career as an educator, to both students and teachers. As I look forward, I plan to continue giving my best to the students and co-workers around me. As much as I love what I do, I am looking forward to retirement in the upcoming years and beginning the next chapter of my life.
What advice would you give to those thinking about a career in education?
A career in education is not an easy one, but it is filled with extraordinary opportunities. Be passionate about what you do, don’t waste a single moment, and "Be a Light"!
