Working with children has always been a passion of Garris’. She has been working in this career field since she was 16 years old, and she has always dreamed of being a teacher.
Now, Garris is preparing to go back to school to get her bachelor's in Education so she can turn that dream into a reality!

JCPS students lead the 21st Annual Veterans Day Celebration, honoring our local heroes and their families.
Our Veterans and attendees were treated to an event filled with patriotic spirit and pomp and circumstance! Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed a Thanksgiving-style meal shared in gratitude and community.

It’s all hands on deck for tomorrow’s JCPS annual Veterans Day Celebration!
All-County Chorus and Band members perfected their pieces, and JROTC cadets practiced their parts of the ceremony, thanks to the preparation and leadership provided by our fine arts staff and JROTC instructors.
JCPS staff have also ensured that the stage is set and the cafeteria is decorated to the nines for our Johnston County Veterans! Following the ceremony, guests and their families will enjoy a homemade Thanksgiving meal.
We are excited to welcome our veterans to SSS tomorrow!

In partnership with Johnston County Government and Johnston County Veterans Office, we are happy to invite all Johnston County veterans, their families, and the community to the 2025 Annual Veterans Day Celebration event tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11th!
The ceremony will be held in the Smithfield-Selma High School gymnasium. Attendees will be served a Thanksgiving-style meal in the cafeteria immediately following.

Today, we wrapped up JOCO WORKS 2025!
Over the course of two days, approximately 3,500 eighth-grade students explored a wide range of career opportunities, discovering new possibilities, learning about potential career paths, and gaining deeper insight into their fields of interest. The event featured more than 40 Johnston County-based industries, including event sponsor Novo Nordisk, UNC Health Johnston, the North Carolina Forestry Association, and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Department.
This hands-on experience gave students a chance to explore real-world careers and connect with the industries that help drive their community forward!
